Subject: Hypnosis
Hi Zaira,
I’m sorry but I do not speak Italian. I have read your messages on the OUCH UK site and I know that you suffer very badly from this condition. I can only speak from my own experience and how hypnosis has helped me.
It is not like you see on the stage for entertainment. Basically it is a method of relaxation and autosuggestion. I should stress that before any one considers using self-hypnosis they should have a word with their doctor first.
I am now into week 11 of my 16-week bout and have been using self-hypnosis from the start. Like any other skill it is something that has to be learned, but once you have the basic technique and you practice more and more the better you become. My experience is that it has helped me a great deal during this bout. It may not work for any one else, it may not work for me again, but at this stage it is working and I have gained tremendous relief by practicing it.
The general reaction seems to be quite negative, but I can only speak from my own experience.
As you know it is almost impossible to concentrate on anything during an attack. I usually practice once a day and so far I have been able to control the pain almost 95%. To date I have not used any medication during this bout. There are no side effects and very little shadowing. The only disadvantage that I can see is the cost of the lessons from the hypno- therapist, about £75 a session.
I am now able to put myself into a very relaxed state and give myself autosuggestions that control the headaches. It is a little difficult to explain but I will try. It works like you see on the stage where a hypnotist will say a certain word and the subject will do a certain thing. I practice the technique to get into the relaxed state. I then give myself an anchor, for example, something you can touch on your body, (I use my thumb). You then make autosuggestion to yourself that at the start of a headache you will touch your anchor and the headache will disappear. It sounds silly and absolutely ridic@lous and I was very sceptical, but it has worked for me. I am still amazed as to the reason how or why it works but it has. I have been in touch with Professor Goadby’s department in Queens Square but they do not recommend hypnosis for the treatment of ch. But their advice is that if it works for me then that’s fine.
You might like to have a look at an e book on the net from this address
www.henrybolduc.com/lifepatternsbook/lifePatterns.htm He rambles on a bit but it does give the basics for hypnosis.
Finally may I ask of you a big favour? As I do not speak Italian could you translate the replies to my message on the OUCH Italia message board?
I wish you well and may you have many pain free days and nights.
